Larry Hedges received the World Cultural Council (WCC) José Vasconcelos World Award of Education on November 3 at the University of Helsinki. According to the World Cultural Council press release, the prize acknowledges Hedges’ “groundbreaking and systematic application of research and his development of methods for meta-analysis over the past four decades, which have contributed to more accurate assessment of evidence across disciplines.”  Read more here.

Graduate student Tim Tsz-Kit Lau received a IMS Hannan Graduate Student Travel Award to attend the IMS Annual Meeting in London, UK and give a contributed talk.

Arend Kuyper, Assistant Professor of Instruction and Director of Data Science, receives a Weinberg College Arts and Sciences Alumni Teaching Award. Read more here

Han Liu, Associate Professor of Statistics and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, will join the faculty on September 1, 2018. He uses computation and data as a lens to explore science and intelligence.

Arend Kuyper, Assistant Professor of Instruction, joined the faculty in September 2017, focusing on the development and application of statistical methods in education and the Department's Data Science initiatives.

Elizabeth Tipton will join the Faculty as Associate Professor of Statistics and Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) on September 1, 2018. Tipton's research focuses on the development of statistical methods and tools for making ‘causal generalizations’.

• Cheng Li (PhD 2014) has accepted a position as a tenure-track assistant professor at the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability, National University of Singapore.

• Statistics Chairman Larry Hedges was appointed by President Obama to serve on the National Education Science Board.  The Board helps establish policy and priorities for the research arm of the US Department of Education. Read more about the Board at: https://ies.ed.gov/director/board/

• Beth Tipton (PhD 2011), Assistant Professor at Columbia University, was awarded the American Educational Research Association’s Early Career Award for Quantitative Research in Education for 2016.

• Yuan Liao (PhD 2010) will be appointed as Associate Professor of Economics at Rutgers University this fall.

• Statistics professors Bruce Spencer and Ajit Tamhane were elected as Fellows of the International Statistical Institute.

• Wendy Chan (PhD 2016) has accepted a position as a tenure-track assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

• Postdoc Nathan VanHoudnos received the award for the outstanding doctoral dissertation among all predoctoral training fellows supported by the US Institute of Education Science.

• Jiangtao Gou has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position at Hunter College of CUNY.

• Qingayng Zhang has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position at University of Arkansas.

Professor Donald B. Rubin receives an honorary degree from Northwestern on June 16, 2017 at Northwestern University’s 159th commencement ceremony. Read more about it here
