Speaker: Kelvin Shi, VP and Head of Biometrics, Kymera Therapeutics (Northwestern 2002, MS in Statistics, and 2010, PhD in Statistics)

This talk will provide insights to graduate students in statistics seeking careers in biotech and the pharmaceutical industry. It will cover foundational steps such as academic and skill development, effective resume crafting, networking strategies, and finding internships. The talk will also delve into job application and interview techniques, emphasizing the importance of standing out in the hiring process through your online presence. To conclude, the talk will offer motivation and encouragement, equipping students with essential knowledge to launch their careers in biotech and pharmaceuticals. 

Dr. Kelvin Shi is a seasoned biometrics team leader with deep expertise in clinical development and global regulatory approvals across a wide range of therapeutic areas and medicinal modalities. He has a proven track record of success in leading biometrics teams at biotech/pharmaceutical organizations of all sizes and stages, achieving milestones such as Phase 3 study delivery, regulatory approvals, and cost-reduction initiatives. Dr. Shi holds a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics from Northwestern University.

Speaker: Shuguang Huang, Chief Scientific Officer, Stat4ward (Northwestern 2001, PhD in Statistics)

This talk will start with a brief introduction of Dr. Huang’s career experience, followed by a few topics that can be helpful in preparing for a career as an industrial statistician. These topics will include: the important attributes of an industrial statistician, the ways in which students can prepare while in school, tips for resume writing, and how to successfully interview. 

Dr. Shuguang Huang has 20 years of experience working in pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies. He had assumed technical and management positions at Eli Lilly, Wyeth, and Pfizer. His most recent position was Associate VP, department head of Biostatistics at Helomics, a cancer diagnostic company. In 2014, he co-founded and assumed the Chief Scientific Officer position for the statistics consulting company Stat4ward.
