Speaker: Dr. Lingyun Liu, Director, Biometrics Department, Vertex Pharmaceuticals

Abstract: This talk aims to provide valuable insights into critical skills and competencies
needed to thrive as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry. Real-world examples
of projects will be shared, illustrating how statisticians make great contributions in the
cross-functional setting. We'll also discuss the importance of networking, continuous
learning, and adaptability in shaping a fulfilling career. By the end of the talk,
students will gain a clearer understanding of the roles statisticians play in the
pharmaceutical industry, along with practical strategies to prepare for and excel in
their future careers.

Dr. Lingyun Liu is currently a director in the biometrics department at Vertex
Pharmaceuticals. She is responsible for multiple programs ranging from preclinical to
post approval lifecycle management. Prior to joining Vertex, she was a consulting
statistician in the strategic consulting group at Cytel. She provided consultation to
biotech and pharmaceutical companies on clinical development plans, innovative trial
designs, regulatory interactions.
