Statistics Major + Closely Related major/minor
The department has identified the following as closely related major/minor programs that require modification to the major/minor requirements for students to do both programs.
Mathematical Methods for the Social Sciences (MMSS) major + Statistics major
Integrated Science Program (ISP) major + Statistics major
Statistics major + Data Science major
Statistics major + Data Science minor
Weinberg Computer Science major/minor + Statistics major
Mathematical Methods for the Social Sciences (MMSS) major + Statistics major
Students will complete all requirements for MMSS major and requirements for Statistics major are as follows:
- Introductory programming course requirement: STAT 201-0
- Introductory Statistics course requirement: STAT 202-0, 210-0, or equivalent is waived
- MATH 226-0 is waived
- MATH 385-0 counts in place of STAT 320-1
- STAT 320-2
- STAT 320-3
- STAT 350-0 is replaced by a combination of MATH 386-1 and MATH 386-2
- 2 Standard Methods Courses
- 2 STAT Electives Approved for the Statistics Major

Integrated Science Program (ISP) major + Statistics major
Students will complete all requirements for ISP major and requirements for Statistics major are as follows:
- Introductory programming course requirement: STAT 201-0
- Introductory Statistics course requirement: STAT 202-0, 210-0, or equivalent is waived
- MATH 226-0 is waived
- STAT 383-0 counts in place of STAT 320-1
- STAT 320-2
- STAT 320-3
- STAT 350-0
- 2 Standard Methods Courses
- 2 STAT Electives Approved for the Statistics Major
Statistics Major + Data Science Major
Students will complete all requirements for Statistics major and requirements for Data Science major are modified as follows:
Students will complete all requirements for Statistics major and requirements for Data Science major are modified as follows:
- Introductory Programming course requirement (STAT 201-0) is replaced with an additional course from the Statistics major Standards Methods course list. Statistics + Data Science majors will take 3 Standard Methods courses instead of 2 (see Statistics Major Requirements for the list of Standard Methods courses).
- Introductory Statistics course requirement (STAT 202-0, 210-0, or equivalent) is waived
- The 2 related Technical and Domain electives are automatically fulfilled by STAT 320-3 and STAT 350-0
- STAT 320-1 and STAT 320-2 will be replaced with 2 elective courses approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Data Science. The 2 elective courses designated as the STAT 320-1 and STAT 320-2 replacements may not be double counted with any other major/minor.
There can be no double counting between the three 300-level elective courses required for the Statistics major and the required Data Science major courses including the elective courses designated as the STAT 201-0, STAT 320-1 and STAT 320-2 replacements.
All other Data Science major requirements must be met.
Statistics Major + Data Science minor
Students will complete all requirements for Statistics major and requirements for Data Science minor are as follows:
- Introductory programming course requirement: STAT 201-0 is, in most cases, replaced by an introductory calculus course that is necessary for the Statistics major
- Introductory Statistics course requirement: STAT 202-0, 210-0 or equivalent is, in most cases, replaced by an introductory calculus course that is necessary for the Statistics major
- STAT 301-1,2,3 or STAT 303-1,2,3
- STAT 302-0
- 1 approved elective – see Data Science Approved Electives
Note: STAT 301-1, 301-2, 301-3, 302-0, 303-1, 303-2, 303-3, and any 300 level electives being used for the Data Science minor cannot be used to fulfill credit requirements for the Statistics major.
Weinberg Computer Science major/minor + Statistics major
Students will complete all requirements for Computer Science major and requirements for Statistics major are modified as follows:
- Introductory Programming course requirement (STAT 201-1 or an alternative introductory computer science course) is replaced with an elective course approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Statistics
- For Computer Science major: Introductory Statistics course requirement: STAT 210-0 is allowed to double-count between the Computer Science major and Statistics major
According to Weinberg policy the “related” courses for these two majors may be double counted
All other Statistics major requirements must be met.
