About the Department

An Exciting Time to Study Statistics

The Department of Statistics and Data Science at Northwestern University is committed to teaching the theory, methodology, and practice of statistics, data science, and artificial intelligence to undergraduate and graduate students. Our faculty drives original, pioneering research that shapes the foundational theory of these fields while actively applying them to diverse domains including engineering, law, medicine, public policy, and the social sciences.

This is an exceptionally exciting era for our discipline. Rapid advances in computing and information technology have transformed the landscape, requiring sophisticated new frameworks to analyze complex, high-dimensional datasets and train massive AI models. This synergy between foundational theory and cutting-edge application is directly woven into our undergraduate and graduate programs, ensuring students receive robust, hands-on training in statistical modeling, data science pipelines, and machine learning. While our department is dynamic and growing, we remain dedicated to maintaining small class sizes, ensuring that students benefit from close collaboration and mentorship with world-class faculty.
