Instruction & Teaching philosophy
‘Student motivation’, ‘student engagement’, and feed-back oriented teaching form the core of my teaching philosophy. I use examples relevant to the current time to make the courses exciting and stimulate student interest. Active learning methods are used to engage students both inside and outside the classroom. I believe teaching is two-way learning. While the students learn the course content, I try to learn about the students, and adapt my teaching to them.
In quantitative disciplines, a strong theoretical understanding is essential for applying methods appropriately. In the current era of AI-assisted coding, procedural knowledge, while necessary, is not sufficient to make meaningful contributions to real-world projects. Therefore, in my courses, I emphasize developing a concrete understanding of the underlying concepts alongside practical skills.
Research interests
My research interests lie at the intersection of statistical machine learning, deep learning, and interpretable artificial intelligence. I am particularly interested in developing reliable and transparent methods for complex, high-dimensional data, such as medical images. My work emphasizes hierarchical and attention-based learning, model interpretability, and careful evaluation to make modern AI tools more trustworthy and useful in consequential real-world settings. I am especially motivated by collaborative applications in health care, public interest technology, and other domains where data-driven insights can support better decisions.
